As a kid, D&D fired my imagination, grew my vocabulary and planted the seeds for my love of both story telling and game design. As an adult, it has given me countless gifts: friendships, memories, and lessons big and small. My relationship with D&D specifically, and tabletop role-playing games in general, over the years has shown me what an incredibly positive influence they can be. Because of this, once the concept of Airlock formed in my mind, I have felt compelled to try and make it a reality. It's true that games like D&D are the foundation of why Airlock exists, but like any good structure, the foundation is only the beginning.
The concept that has become Airlock has had several different names over the years. Once the latest iteration came into focus, I started to work on a name that I thought evoked this "space between spaces" I was trying to build. An airlock is the intermediate space you use to get from one environment to another. Similarly Airlock's goal is to bridge the gap from the real world to all the imagined ones from books, movies, TV and games in an immersive, fun and whimsical way.
The spark that brought things into focus was attending PAX East 2019 and feeling the rush of being with thousands of similarly-minded folks, all looking to have fun and share their fandom. I wanted to capture that feeling year-round, on a smaller scale: an inclusive, exciting, themed location that celebrates all the fandoms of our members as well as providing space and services for a wide variety of table-top games and collectible card games, not to mention extensive dungeon master resources and streaming services. A large social space with several massive displays for sharing live events and streamed content will serve as the central hub, where we will serve themed food and beverages.
COVID put my plans on hold for a while, but now feels like the right time to toss out this message in a bottle and see what kind of reaction it generates. I know you're out there. I just hope this finds you... so, please, if this sounds like a community you'd like to be part of, or even help build, please make sure to sign up and register your interest. Thank you!
